Luminoso Technologies, Inc. is a text analytics software as a service(Saas) company that helps companies understand their customers better and take action to maximize customer satisfaction and loyalty 
The foundation of Luminoso’s technology was laid in 1999. Catherine Havasi was part of an Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) project in the MIT Media Lab under professor emeritus Marvin Minsky. The project's mission was to give computers "common sense". 
This team along with Havasi’s collaborator, Pushpiner Singh, built the “Open Mind Common Sense” (OMCS) project. This cloud-based crowdsourcing tool collected information from the Internet and put it into a database. This database contained words definitions and the relation between these words. 
Initially, Luminoso's job was to provide a graphic interface and analytics engine for this project but this technology evolved into analyzing text data. 
Luminoso was launched through the MIT’s Venture Mentoring Service. 
Luminoso takes in unstructured text in the form of news stories, research results, blogs, forums, social media, surveys,etc. Luminoso applies its technology to identify the ideas, patterns or connections related to the inputted query. This query is as per its clients demand. Thus, Luminoso provides actionable intelligence to its clients which enables these clients to understand their customers. Pricing is based on the amount of data processed and number of languages screened.
Luminoso's technology derives understanding by merging Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Probability and a database of 17 million facts with a innate awareness of context. This technology analyzes text in $nine languages including emojis.
